Tolerance
2014
Location: Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam, Netherlands
The Dutch are a people long known for their religious tolerance. But tolerance can lead to apathy. The Nieuwe Kerk was built in the 15th century as a Catholic church. It was converted to Calvinist Protestantism after the Protestant Reformation and eventually became a Dutch Reformed Church. Christian services were held here for about 600 years until 1979, when it was deemed too expensive to keep as a church and ownership was transferred to a cultural organization. Now it serves as a civic center for exhibitions, art shows and organ recitals.
